Write a short code on the side of each box with a marker, and keep the list of what is inside that code on your phone. That is the answer for most moves. QR stickers and NFC tags are upgrades, and fewer people reach for them than the internet suggests.
What 203 people did in 90 days
Between 2026-07-07 and 2026-10-04, 203 people opened Boxy (we counted unique users in our own TelemetryDeck, no personal data). Of those:
- 75 created at least one box
- 42 searched for an item across their boxes
- 34 opened a box by scanning a code with the camera
- 31 added contents by voice
- 12 used an NFC tag
- 3 printed sticker labels
These are small numbers and we give no percentages: with a few hundred users, a rate would be noise. Printing and NFC are paid features in Boxy, so their counts exclude everyone on the free plan. Read them as a floor, not as what people prefer. The free plan covers 2 places with up to 5 boxes each, which is 10 boxes.
The one that did not work: our own scanner
In the same 90 days the in-app camera scanner finished 58 times. 38 found no code in the frame at all, 14 found a code that matched no box, and 6 found a box. We have not yet worked out how much of the 38 is people pointing the camera at nothing and how much is the scanner failing on real labels. Until we do, typing the four-character code is the dependable way to open a box in Boxy, and it is also what the written-on-the-box method relies on.
Which labelling method for which move
Up to about 15 boxes: written code
A marker, a code like K7P2 on two sides of each box, and the contents typed or spoken into the app. It costs nothing and survives a dead phone battery on the other end, because the code is on the box.
Dozens of boxes or a storage unit: QR stickers
Printing starts to pay off when writing 40 codes by hand and keeping them straight becomes the chore. Boxy prints sticker sheets (Avery 5444 was the format chosen in 7 of the 19 print runs we logged). Our opinion, and it could be wrong: unless you are labelling more than about 30 boxes, you will not recover the setup time.
Boxes you open often: NFC tags
An NFC tag (an NTAG215 is a safe buy, see our NTAG213 vs 215 vs 216 comparison) lets you tap the box with your iPhone instead of aiming a camera. It suits a garage shelf you visit weekly more than a box you will open once, in the new flat.
Do you need an app at all?
For ten boxes, no. A notebook with the codes works. An app starts to matter when you want to ask "where is the winter blanket?" and get one box back, or when the person moving with you needs the same list. Boxy does that search across every box and shares places with family through iCloud. The free plan holds 10 boxes; the paid plan removes the limit and adds NFC tags and label printing.
Questions people ask
What is the best way to label moving boxes?
A short code in marker on the side of the box, matched to a list on your phone. Move up to QR or NFC only when the number of boxes makes handwriting the chore.
Is NFC better than QR for storage boxes?
They solve different problems. QR needs a printed sticker and a camera; NFC needs a tag and a tap. In Boxy, 12 people used NFC and 34 scanned with the camera in 90 days, so neither is the default.
